It’s just before 1:00 p.m. and I’m walking out of Latte Da with an Iced Caramel Macchiato.

Despite the cool breeze that was blowing off the lake last night, the heatwave hasn’t broken. I’m walking along Water Street during the hottest part of an already oppressively hot day, on my way to pick up my ring at Charmed & Dangerous. April texted me while I was waiting in line for my iced coffee to tell me she’ll meet me there. We want to know if Winston has solved his alarm mystery yet.

“Hello!” Ruby squawks after Winston buzzes us into the inner door of the store.

Winston is serving a man who has a little boy with him. I’d guess the boy is about six years old. While his dad and Winston talk over a piece of jewellery, the boy is amusing himself by talking to Ruby, and tugging the ribbons that keep the balloons from floating up to the ceiling and staying there.

“We got my mom a locket,” the boy says to me out of nowhere. “It’s a special locket because it has a picture of me and Daddy in it.”

“That is a special locket,” I reply. “Your mom is lucky. I’m sure she’ll love it.”

“Oh, she will,” he assures me.

He runs off to play with the balloons.

“Oh, to have as much confidence as a six-year-old boy,” April whispers.

“I know, right?” I agree with her.

The store goes through its familiar shake-and-rumble routine when the air conditioner turns on.

“Look, Daddy! The balloons dance in the wind,” the boy says, laughing and pointing at the balloons.

The dad pays for the locket, and Winston wraps the box for him in turquoise gift wrap and ties it with a white ribbon. The dad takes his son’s hand and they turn to leave.

“Daddy, please may I have a balloon?” the boy asks, using his best manners.

“Not today, kiddo. We’ve got to go.”

“But Daaaadddy, they’re dancing balloons. Please, can I have one?” he asks, stomping his foot.

They’re dancing balloons! They dance when the air conditioner comes on!

I jab April in the arm. “They’re dancing balloons!” I hiss at her.

“I heard,” she says, nodding and rubbing her arm where I just poked her. “Ouch!”

Winston comes out from behind the counter with a shiny pair of brass scissors in his hand.

“Of course, you can have a balloon, young man! How about two balloons? One for you, and we can tie one to your mom’s gift?”

Winston cuts a ribbon and hands a gold balloon to the boy.

“Thank you, Mr. Shimmer.”

Winston cuts another ribbon and ties a silver balloon to the jewellery box the dad is holding.

The dad and his son leave with their new locket and balloons.

“Winston!” I shout. “The balloons and the banner are blowing in the breeze of the air conditioner!”

“So they are, Pearl,” Winston agrees with me, smiling.

“They’re dancing. And they’re taller than three feet,” I explain, trying to lead him to the same conclusion I arrived at a few moments ago.

“Ohmigosh!” April declares, covering her mouth with her hand.
